Plumbing & Trash

Please always refer first to your lease for any and all questions.

Plumbing

Care for the premises requires special attention to avoid flooding the resident’s apartment or surrounding apartments.

Common policy violations contributing to flooding include:

1. Misuse of the Kitchen Sink Garbage Disposal

The kitchen sink comes equipped with a switch, that, when flipped, assists with draining the sink. This sink garbage disposal is meant for expediting liquids down the pipes; it is not equipped to handle most food and non-food items.

When using the kitchen disposal please:

  1. Run with cold water only (hot water can clog the pipes).

  2. Make sure the water is running.

  3. Do not add too much waste at one time, and avoid non-liquid waste whenever possible.

2. Misuse of Dishwasher

Please make sure to rinse and clear off food items from dishes before placing in the dishwasher. Dishwasher drains, when clogged, may flood the apartment.

3. Flushing Toilet Wipes

Any kind of wipes, even ones marked as flushable/disposable on the packaging, should not be flushed down any toilet fixture, including the toilets in common area restrooms.

Plumbing Alterations

Most plumbing alterations (such as the installation of a bidet) are not allowed. In the case that a resident desires to have a different shower head installed, the resident may purchase the shower head and place a maintenance request to have it installed. A Facilities and Plant Operations (FPO) staff member will come in and make the installation. Before vacating the apartment, the resident must place a maintenance request through the resident’s online portal to have the original shower head reinstalled.

Trash

Every floor has been equipped with a trash chute for trash disposal. Trash chutes should only be used for items that fit inside a kitchen sized trash bag. Christmas trees, cardboard boxes, Styrofoam packaging, glass, appliances, furniture, etc. are not permitted to be disposed of in the trash chute. These can cause the chute to clog, resulting in expensive repair. Residents responsible for a clogged trash chute may be charged for any damages or labor costs associated with repair.

Each building has a Cardboard Room that can be found on the 2nd floor. All cardboard boxes should be flattened or broken down and placed in this room. Do not place pizza boxes in this room. Pizza boxes should be torn into pieces and placed in a regular trash bag.

Bulk trash (appliances, furniture, or any trash not inside of a trash bag) will be removed without additional cost.

  • In Washington Apartments, the resident must place such items in the Bulk Trash Room located on the 2nd floor. If the room is full, it is the resident’s responsibility to notify the Housing Office.

  • In Swindoll Tower, resident must submit a maintenance request through their online portal for bulk trash removal. The Housing Office will contact you directly about next steps to dispose of your bulk trash.

Trash may never be stored in the hallways, including outside the Cardboard or Bulk Trash rooms. This is a fire hazard and violations may result in a fee.

During peak move seasons (May/August), the Bulk Trash Room in Washington will be locked and reserved for vacating residents due to the massive influx of bulk trash items. Washington residents should place a maintenance request for bulk trash during this time. The Housing Office will contact you directly about next steps to dispose of your bulk trash.
